Statement of Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) on the Withdrawal of U.S. Combat Troops from Iraq

WASHINGTON (August 18, 2010) -- “Today President Obama has delivered on his pledge to the American people that all U.S. combat troops would be removed from Iraq by the end of August. This action brings our nation very close to the end of a seven and a half year struggle that has cost more than 4,400 Americans their lives and left 32,000 other Americans wounded.
 

“Our nation honors the sacrifice and service of all of the warriors who served in Iraq. They fought bravely, under difficult circumstances, and they deserve the permanent thanks of the American people as they now return home to their families and their loved ones. We also remember especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”
