WASHINGTON (December 11, 2011) -- Following the end of the climate negotiations at the Durban climate conference, Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) issued the following statement praising the efforts of the international negotiators. Rep. Markey is the co-author of the only climate bill to pass a body of Congress, and is the top Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee.

These negotiations went into double overtime to find a way to ensure it’s not game over for the planet, and it appears a last-second score saved the day again. But the planet can’t afford these same kind of last-ditch efforts, when scientists say we have scant time left to avoid the worst effects of global warming.

“Even as Republican presidential candidates debate the reality of climate change, the international negotiations have made progress. It’s time for the United States to adopt clean energy policies that will create jobs in America and keep us competitive in the global clean energy race
.”
