MEDFORD, MA – Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) today announced the release of $2 million in federal funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for the construction of two mini-high platforms at the Wedgemere Commuter Rail Station in the Town of Winchester. The funding will be released to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). These mini-high platforms will finally allow all citizens to have access to the MBTA's Commuter Rail train route between the cities of Boston and Lowell. In the short-term, the project will also create a number of good-paying jobs as a result of this new construction project.

"Not only will this project increase access to public transportation, it will also create good paying jobs that will provide a boost to the local economy, a real win-win for Winchester," said Rep. Markey. "With this project, every citizen of Winchester will soon have the ability to easily travel to Boston to cheer on their beloved Red Sox, to continue their education or to attend important doctors' appointments.  We must continue to make access to public transportation for all citizens a key priority in every community throughout the Commonwealth."

State Senator Jehlen, who represents Winchester and who has been a longtime supporter of the Wedgemere project, said: "Providing access to public transportation is one of the most important things that we can do.  I am very pleased that we are able to move forward on this important project for handicapped accessibility in Winchester."

State Representative Lewis of Winchester, who worked hard to secure this funding, said: "I am thrilled that through the hard work of dedicated citizens, we were able to secure this funding for Wedgemere Station.  This is a great victory that will enhance the lives of Winchester residents."

Markey concluded, "I applaud the efforts of the officials in the Town of Winchester, including State Senator Patricia Jehlen, State Representative Jason Lewis and Town Manager Melvin Kleckner, all of whom worked closely with Secretary of the Department of Transportation Jeff Mullan, and the MBTA, to obtain these essential funds that will enhance the lives of those who use public transportation."
