WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressmen Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Rick Boucher (D-Va.) announced today that they are set to switch Energy and Commerce subcommittee gavels in the 111th Congress. Markey is set to chair Subcommittee on Energy and Environment, and Boucher is set to chair the Communications, Technology and the Internet Subcommittee.
Markey said: "At a time when our economy and planet are both in crisis, I am eager to chair the Subcommittee on Energy and Environment. I look forward to pursuing the legislative agenda on climate change and clean energy at this critical time. I also look forward to working with Speaker Pelosi, Chairman Waxman, my friend Rick Boucher and other members on these issues. In the short term, Rep. Boucher and I will work together to ensure a smooth transition on DTV issues at this critical time."
Boucher said: "I am pleased to have the opportunity to chair the Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet for the 111th Congress. The new position gives me the opportunity to further my work to shape telecommunications policy, including expanding access to broadband and ensuring a successful DTV transition."
The Energy and Environment Subcommittee has legislative and oversight jurisdiction over national energy policy, climate change, fuel economy standards, Superfund, hazardous waste, and safe drinking water. The Communications, Technology and the Internet Subcommittee has jurisdiction over telecommunications, broadcasting, cable, and the Internet.
Markey and Boucher have pledged to work together on both energy and telecommunications issues to assure a smooth transition. "The 111th Congress is facing important challenges, including climate change and the imminent DTV transition, and we will continue to work together to ensure a seamless transition as we exchange subcommittee responsibilities," Markey and Boucher said.
