WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-MA), the Dean of the Massachusetts Congressional Delegation, on the decision made today by Massachusetts’ Sen. John Kerry to not begin a campaign for president in 2008:

“John Kerry’s run for the White House in 2004 enhanced his stature in the Senate and in the nation.  There can be no doubt today that the State of Our Union would be vastly improved if Senator John Kerry had been elected President Kerry two years ago.

“His decision now to focus his energy on continuing to serve the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is a disappointment to his legion of supporters but preserves one of the most influential voices in the U.S. Senate working on behalf of our great state, the nation, and the world.

“He and Teresa have dedicated their lives to serving the public in many different ways, creative ways, important ways, going well beyond the duties of John’s elective office and embracing the hopes and needs of all Americans. We are very fortunate to have them both working on our behalf.”
