Over 24,000 MA Residents Could Lose Benefits if Bill Does Not Pass
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), the dean of the Massachusetts Congressional Delegation, issued the following statement after voting in favor of H.R 5618, a bill to extend unemployment insurance (UI), which passed the House and is awaiting action in the Senate.
“While today the House took an important step toward providing much needed help for millions of jobless Americans, Congress must still finalize this emergency legislation to extend unemployment insurance benefits to millions of Americans families, including over 24,000 Massachusetts residents,” said Markey.
“Because of continued Republican obstruction, millions of Americans who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own could lose these critical benefits on the eve of the July Fourth holiday. We must pass this critical legislation to help hardworking Americans make ends meet as they look for a new job.”
According to an analysis prepared by the House of Representatives’ Committee on Ways and Means, over 24,000 Massachusetts claimants could lose unemployment benefits if Congress fails to act.
