WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Edward J. Markey (D-MA), the ranking Democrat on the Telecommunications and Internet Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, today responded to the proposed acquisition of BellSouth by AT&T:

"Twenty years after the government broke up Ma Bell, this deal represents a mother and child reunion. Our nation's telecommunications markets must be vigorously competitive and open to innovation in order to promote job creation and economic growth. This merger proposal is one that unquestionably merits the utmost scrutiny by government antitrust officials. In addition, I believe lawmakers should thoroughly review this merger proposal to fully assess its impact on consumers and competition."
