ROV Footage Still Not Available; Macondo Oil Still Remains in Environment

WASHINGTON (October 25, 2012) – BP announced today that it has plugged the leaks in the 40 foot high containment dome, the so-called cofferdam, that had been leaking oil originally from BP’s blown-out Macondo well. Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) today called on the company to devise a plan to remove all remaining oil from the dome and any other wreckage from the Deepwater Horizon incident. Rep. Markey also renewed his original call to release footage from the survey and resolution of this event, which had been previously promised by the Coast Guard, but has not yet been made available.

“We shouldn’t have to wait for the next leak to plug another problem. BP must devise a plan to clean up any remaining oil in the environment, and do so in the most transparent manner possible,” said Rep. Markey, who is the top Democrat on the Natural Resources Committee.

Markey also renewed his call for BP to immediately make public all footage from underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) that have been operating in the vicinity of the BP Macondo well.

“Last week the Coast Guard announced that BP was going to make public the video from all of the ROVs that have been inspecting the area around the Macondo well, but those videos are still not available,” said Rep. Markey. “It is time for the Coast Guard and BP to make this information available to the public.”
