Lawmaker authored the legislation to rename the Woburn Post Office after fallen Officer John “Jack” Maguire

WASHINGTON, D.C. – At a ceremony attended by family members, elected officials, and hundreds of members of the Woburn community, Congressman Edward J. Markey (D-Malden) today honored the life and service of Police Officer John “Jack” Maguire with the renaming of the Woburn post office to the “Officer John Maguire Post Office Building”. Officer Maguire, a 34-year veteran of the Woburn police force, was fatally shot in the line of duty when he responded to a robbery at a Kohl’s department store on December 26, 2010. Along with legislation introduced in the Senate by Senators John Kerry and Scott Brown, Rep. Markey's bill, signed into law by President Obama on November 23, 1011, dedicates the post office located at 462 Washington Street to Officer Maguire, just a few streets away from where he made his ultimate sacrifice. Officer Maguire was the first officer killed in the line of duty from the Woburn Police Department since its inception in 1847.

Officer Maguire paid the ultimate price protecting the citizens of Woburn,” said Rep. Markey. “We are incredibly grateful for his selfless acts that tragic day, which capped more than three decades of outstanding dedication to the safety and security of the people of Woburn. The City of Woburn received the best kind of law enforcement in the bravery, courage, and heroism illustrated by Jack Maguire on that cold December day. It is an honor and a privilege to be here with his family, his brother Chuck, his children Shawn, Tara, and Bryan, and his loving wife Desiree.”

Rep. Markey introduced the legislation at the request of Mayor Scott Galvin of Woburn and Police Chief Richard Kelley of the Woburn Police Department. Because of their leadership and commitment to making this honor a reality for the Maguire family, the residents of Woburn will be forever reminded of Officer Maguire’s bravery and heroism.

Officer Jack Maguire was born and raised in the City of Woburn, Massachusetts.  Officer Maguire was the son of the late Thomas J. Maguire, Jr., the Woburn Police Chief from 1951 to 1978, and he was wearing his father’s badge number 23 at the time of his death. Just days before his death, Officer Maguire had celebrated his 60th birthday and given notice of his intention to retire in October 2011.
