WASHINGTON (August 1, 2012) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture today reported that more than half of the counties in the United States are currently considered disaster areas due to drought. Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) today called on the members who make-up more than half of the House of Representatives and who question the science of climate change and have repeatedly voted against taking action to cut the pollution that causes global warming, which leads to longer, stronger droughts and other devastating effects.
 
Below is the statement of Rep. Markey, the top Democrat on the Natural Resources Committee:
 
“More than half of U.S. counties are afflicted with severe drought, and yet more than half of the U.S. House of Representatives still promote climate doubt. The Republican strategy of sticking their heads in the sand about global warming will only get easier as more of our country dries up.
 
“If House Republicans stop denying the science behind climate change and start looking around their districts, they will see the danger and costs of their anti-science attitudes.”
