WASHINGTON (March 6, 2013) -- Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) today decried the latest attack by House Republicans on vital social services like Head Start and low-income energy assistance through their government funding bill that passed today during a snowstorm in Washington, DC. The bill affirms the deep, arbitrary cuts to government services, while retaining corporate loopholes and tax breaks for oil companies and others who do not need them. Rep. Markey voted against the Budget Control Act of 2011 that created the sequester.
Rep. Markey, the top Democrat on the Natural Resources Committee, released the following statement on the legislation:
“This snow job vote can't hide the economic storm that will befall millions of American workers, kids, and seniors from sequestration. The worst snowstorms are slow-moving, piling accumulated effects over time. Sequestration is no different, and in the weeks and months to come, more Americans will feel the effects of sequestration pile up at their doorstep in the forms of unpaid bills, pink slips, and notices of services lost. We need to stop giving corporations a pass in these budget deals and start giving middle and working class families some help.”
