Washington (June 27, 2016) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) released the following statement today after the Supreme Court ruled in the Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt case.

“Today’s, Supreme Court decision is a victory for women and the Constitution. A majority of the Court rightly concluded that Texas’s abortion clinic law was a mere pretext for making it more difficult for women to exercise their constitutionally protected reproductive rights.

“Even an 8-member Supreme Court was able to see the Texas law for what it was:  a charade intended not to protect women’s health, but to make it more onerous for them to exercise their constitutionally protected rights. We should be expanding access to safe reproductive health care for women, not restricting it in any way.”
