BP Stonewalling Congress on Oil Sheen Information
 

WASHINGTON (December 13, 2012) -- Today BP’s undersea rovers are conducting a delayed survey of the underwater wreckage and area surrounding the Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico, following the second incident of a detected oil sheen. Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) today renewed his call for BP, as well as the U.S. Coast Guard, to release all information related to the surveys of the Deepwater Horizon wreckage and the surrounding area, including video, maps and documents related to the leaks.
 
Rep. Markey, along with Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.) have been urging BP and the Coast Guard to release this information. BP has refused to hand over documents, video or other evidence related to the survey.
 
“There is no statute of limitations or protections for a crime against the environment, and BP should immediately hand over any and all information related to this new chapter in their oil spill disaster,” said Rep. Markey, who is the Ranking Member of the Natural Resources Committee. “BP can’t hide these new oil sheens from the American people, and they shouldn’t be allowed to hide the information about what’s going on at the bottom of the ocean.”
 
The two Democrats had previously pushed BP for information on the original sheen from September. They continued their inquiry following the November sheen, this time asking the Coast Guard for information due to BP’s intransigence.
