WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), senior member of the Energy and Commerce Committee and former chairman of the Communications, Technology and the Internet Subcommittee, released the following statement after the latest media stories reported new public information about the Google Street View case. Rep. Markey called for a Congressional hearing on the case after the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) fined Google $25,000 for obstructing its investigation into the Street View privacy breach.
 
“Google’s motto has always been ‘Do No Evil’ - it should also be ‘Do No Eavesdropping’. Google needs to fully explain to Congress and the public what it knew about the collection of data through its Street View program, why it impeded the FCC investigation, and what it is doing to ensure appropriate privacy safeguards are in place to protect consumer’s personal information. I once again call for an immediate Congressional hearing to get to the bottom of this very serious situation.”

In May 2010, Reps. Markey, Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.) and Joe Barton (R-Texas) wrote to Google then-Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt seeking answers to the company’s collection of private information over Wi-Fi networks.
