Markey (D-Mass.) and Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Chair and Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asia, and Representatives Ami Bera (CA-07) and Steve Chabot (OH-01), Chair and Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia, and Nonproliferation, today released the following statement on Taiwan’s National Day.

“We extend our congratulations and warmest wishes to the people of Taiwan on their 111^th National Day. The robust U.S.-Taiwan partnership is underpinned by our shared commitment to democratic values and principles, and we are honored to consider ourselves close friends to Taiwan.

“Taiwan has long been a trusted partner in advancing peace, prosperity, and stability in the Indo-Pacific and beyond. It has consistently led in the international fight against global health threats and generously shares its expertise on issues ranging from cybersecurity to law enforcement cooperation through the Global Cooperation and Training Framework. It is a major economic partner for many countries and is a significant contributor to global technological advances. Time and again, Taiwan has demonstrated to the world its capabilities to be a force for good.

“Despite Taiwan’s invaluable contributions, the People’s Republic of China continues to isolate Taiwan from the international community and has escalated pressure on the island’s 23.5 million inhabitants. The People’s Liberation Army has flown a record number of aircraft in Taiwan’s air defense zone and has conducted live-fire military drills near Taiwan, undermining cross-strait stability, threating Taiwan and international peace and security. Beijing has also continued to economically bully Taiwan and some of its friends in an attempt to further advance PRC false narratives and claims on Taiwan.

“Congress stands united in support of the people of Taiwan and their democracy, and against any attempt by Beijing to isolate or threaten Taiwan. We look forward to continuing to strengthen our partnership with Taiwan and further bolstering our security, economic, and people-to-people ties.”
