MEDFORD (April 19, 2013) – Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), who represents the 5th Congressional District, including Watertown and portions of Cambridge, released the following statement on the events of the last 24 hours related to the Boston Marathon bombings, culminating in the capture of the second suspect in the attacks:
“After a long week and an excruciating day, one bomber is dead and one is captured thanks to the amazing law enforcement officers of Massachusetts and the FBI. They did it, and we cheer for them as our heroes.
“Today the people of Watertown and Cambridge displayed remarkable courage, as did the entire Massachusetts community this week, and their patience and assistance allowed law enforcement to act swiftly and decisively.
“We mourn the loss of MIT officer Sean Collier, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Our prayers are with Richard H. Donohue, Jr. of the MBTA Police and the many other police officers still recovering from their injuries. The courage of law enforcement always triumphs over the cowardice of terrorism. The actions and sacrifices by Massachusetts law enforcement over the last 24 hours will stand as some of its finest moments.
“In the days and weeks and months ahead, let us prove these evil men wrong by walking freely on our streets and in our neighborhoods, encouraging new friendships with each other. Let us rededicate ourselves to our shared values of peace, community, and the belief in the inherent goodness of our citizens.”
