WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), dean of the Massachusetts Congressional delegation, released the following statement after Democrats filed a discharge petition to bring the middle class tax cuts already passed by the Senate to the House floor for a vote.

“An overwhelming majority of Americans agree: the wealthiest Americans should pay their fair share in taxes. Democrats are committed to fighting for middle class families and ensuring they can enter the new year knowing that they will not face higher taxes. If we do not pass this measure, the average family will see a $2,200 tax hike in 2013.  In Massachusetts, that would ensure a significant tax hike for 2.5 million middle class families.  That is unacceptable. By bringing to a vote on legislation to provide tax relief for the middle-class, Democrats are calling on Republicans to stop holding middle-class tax cuts hostage while protecting the Bush-era tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires.”
