Washington (February 24, 2014) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) released the following statement regarding Rep. John Dingell’s (D-Mich.) announcement that he would retire from Congress:

“The Congress is losing its master of the House, an irreplaceable force of will, intellect, and knowledge. John Dingell is in the pantheon of parliamentarians and our entire country owes him a debt of gratitude for his historical length of extraordinary service to America.

“For more than half a century, John Dingell has compiled an incredible legislative record that is unmatched in its breadth and depth. From his successful lifelong crusade to expand health care coverage, to his protection of consumers, to his sweeping reforms of energy, environment and telecommunications policy, he has improved the lives of Americans everywhere. His dedication to protecting endangered species, and promoting clean air and water reflects his love of his Michigan roots.

“I am honored to have served for so many years with John Dingell, and I wish John and Debbie the best of luck in their new path together.”
