Washington – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), top Democrat on the Africa and Global Health subcommittee, released the following statement on recent events in Burundi.

“I am deeply concerned by recent events in Burundi. Violence in the streets and the death of protestors paints a clear picture of instability. President Nkurunziza could have prevented these actions by adhering to the terms of his country’s constitution that prevent a third term as president. News of a potential military coup overnight is very disturbing, and I will continue to monitor the situation as events unfold. I hope all sides will work for dialogue that helps restore civil order, pursue elections and the peaceful transition of power, and pave the way for a more stable Burundi.”
