Boston (March 25, 2024) – Senators Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) today announced their successful efforts to secure more than $5.4 million in federal funding for health and human services, water and environmental infrastructure, and government archives supporting four community-based projects across the Merrimack Valley.

“Water, health, and history have long been central to the fabric of the Merrimack Valley, and these four projects will use federal dollars to continue that legacy,” said Senator Markey. “I am proud to have worked with Senator Warren and Congresswoman Trahan to secure this funding for new hospital beds in Lawrence, for clean drinking water in Pepperell, Groton, and Dunstable, for culvert replacement to mitigate flooding in the Chelmsford Water District, and for Methuen to make its rich history accessible to all.”

“From new hospital beds for patients to clean drinking water for our families and our kids, these investments for Merrimack Valley will have a profound impact on the daily lives of those who call the Valley ‘home,’” said Senator Warren. “Make no mistake: I’ll keep fighting for even more federal funding to strengthen our communities.”

The Merrimack Valley is home to four projects that have received funding in the FY24 funding package, including:

  • $2,975,000 for Lawrence General Hospital to replace the long-serving hospital beds used for maternity, telemetry, intensive care, and medical surgical care at the hospital.
  • $1,275,000 for the Chelmsford Water District to replace two critical culverts in the community.
  • $1,000,000 for water treatment and PFAS mitigation in Pepperell, Groton, and Dunstable.
  • $222,000 for the City of Methuen to make local history resources accessible to researchers, students, genealogists, and the general public by setting up a new digital, searchable database of archival materials.
