Consumer protections make Cape Wind contract cost-effective, shows benefits well exceed costs

Washington, D.C. — Today Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Malden), the dean of the Massachusetts Congressional Delegation, issued the following statement upon Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities approval of the power purchase agreement between National Grid and Cape Wind:

Today’s agreement signals that Massachusetts’ clean energy future is blowing in the wind.

“I commend the DPU’s commitment to protecting Massachusetts consumers and the public interest in this contract, as well as working to meet the state’s renewable energy goals and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

“The winds of change will soon fuel the homes of Massachusetts.

“With this agreement in place, Massachusetts will become a leader in offshore wind generation and create hundreds of new jobs for the Bay State.”
