Washington, D.C. (March 24, 2022) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) today met with Supreme Court Nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as her confirmation hearings on the Capitol come to a close. Following two days of wide-ranging, and at times unreasonable, questioning of Judge Jackson, Senator Markey affirmed his deep support for her nomination and the importance of her background as a public defender.

“Meeting with Judge Jackson only underlined what I have believed since President Biden announced her nomination: she is eminently qualified to serve on our nation’s highest court,” said Senator Markey. “During our time together today, Judge Jackson displayed the same qualities that she showed throughout her hearings: candor, intellect, wisdom, and character befitting a Supreme Court Justice. Not only will Judge Jackson be the first Black woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court, she will be the first public defender to do so. As a public defender, she has worked to protect the freedoms and constitutional rights of all Americans – not just the wealthy or powerful. Her background underpins a deep commitment to fairness, due process, and equal protection under the law. I look forward to having the honor of voting for her confirmation.”
