Washington (March 6, 2025) – Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee Ranking Member Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) released the following statement in response to Small Business Administration (SBA) Administrator Kelly Loeffler’s announcement that the SBA will relocate six of its regional offices currently in municipalities considered to be “sanctuary cities.” The Region 1 regional office, located in Boston and co-located with the Boston district office, is among the regional offices slated for relocation.

“In small business, the three C's are capital, contracts, and counseling. But Administrator Loeffler has made clear that in Trump’s Small Business Administration, the three C’s are closures, cuts, and chaos.

“Administrator Loeffler is doing the bidding of Trump by picking a fight with Boston and other deeply Democratic cities around the country for political gain. Relocating regional offices such as the one in Boston, which serves businesses throughout New England, and cutting programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, and education, is just part of the Trump administration’s hateful agenda to terrorize hardworking members of our community to fund tax breaks for billionaires.

“If Trump and Administrator Loeffler wanted to put America first, they would put Main Street first. Closing SBA regional offices will make it harder for small businesses to compete, expand, and create jobs. Rather than helping Main Street, they are paving a Pain Street in cities and towns across the country. I will not stand for the Trump administration bullying Boston and the Bay State, and I will continue fighting for resources for small businesses. The chaos the Trump administration is trying to unleash on our small business owners will not distract us from building a strong economy where everyone can thrive.”
