Massachusetts stands to lose more than 50K jobs, billions in funding for education, infrastructure, health care

Washington (May 5, 2015) – After voting against the 2016 Republican budget today, Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) pointed to the disastrous impact the partisan budget would have on the families and industries of Massachusetts.

“This Republican budget plays like a horror movie, where children, seniors and the vulnerable are trapped by an axe-wielding villain cutting programs they need to survive. And like a budget zombie, sequestration rises from the dead, to kill more jobs and livelihoods.

“The Republican budget eviscerates vital programs like Head Start, Medicaid and Pell Grants that provide support every day to Massachusetts's working families. Our businesses will lose jobs by the thousands and funding by the billions with cuts to federal medical and health research, endangering our position as a global high-tech, clean-tech, bio-tech innovation hub.  Investments in health care, education, and infrastructure are the foundations of the Massachusetts economy, and this budget cuts right at the heart of our business plan.

“We need a balanced long-term budget solution that is fair and responsible, raising revenue while reducing wasteful and unnecessary federal spending. And we need to completely eliminate sequestration instead of protecting already-bloated defense spending with a budget gimmick.”
