Urge Trump administration to press government to investigate threats to civil society and review certification of human rights record
Washington (October 24, 2018) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and Representative Jan Schakowsky (IL-09) today led a letter with 50 of their Senate and House colleagues highlighting the growing threats against human rights defenders, journalists, and international human rights observers in Honduras. The lawmakers cite death threats to journalists and human rights groups, expulsions of Americans and other non-Hondurans documenting human rights violations, and intimidation campaigns against members of civil society as grave concerns around Honduras’s human rights record. In their letter, the Senator Markey, Congresswoman Schakowsky, and the lawmakers call on the Trump administration to request the Honduran government immediately investigate these attacks, direct the State Department to reassess its certification of human rights conditions in Honduras, investigate threats against Americans, and publicly express concern about these attacks.
“The Trump administration can’t be in the business of permitting impunity,” said Senator Markey. “Continued support of Juan Orlando Hernández’s government without continued checks on its behavior will only fuel the destruction of the rule of law, cripple an already devastated economy, and allow for a pervasive fear among the Honduran people, which are the very factors leading to the mass migration of ordinary citizens from Honduras we are currently witnessing. In order to properly address the plight of those in the migrant caravan fleeing Honduras, the administration must develop policies that tackle the root causes of this migration, not just make hateful assertions about those fleeing or deny them refuge.”
“By supporting the corrupt and repressive regime of Juan Orlando Hernández, the United States is tacitly approving state-sanctioned violence and the complete disregard for worker rights, indigenous rights, and individual freedoms,” said Rep. Schakowsky. “The Hernández regime has made what was already an uphill climb for impoverished Hondurans impossibly steep, and thus helped to create the circumstances that lead immigrants and refugees to flee towards the United States. By supporting Mr. Hernández while barely questioning the apparent human rights violations we outlined in our letter, President Trump and his Administration have some responsibility in creating this situation as well. We should not tolerate this anti-Democratic behavior in an ally of the United States.”

El Senador Markey y la Representante Schakowsky Lideran un Llamado a Exigir que Responsabilizan el Gobierno de Honduras por la situación de derechos humanos
La carta insta la Administración a Presionar el Gobierno para Investigar Amenazas a la Sociedad Civil y Revalorar la Certificación en de Derechos Humanos
Washington (24 de Octubre, 2018) – El Senador Edward J. Markey (D-Mass) y La Representante Jan Schakowsky (D-Il) son los líderes de una carta con 50 colegas de la Cámara de Representantes y el Senado que fue enviada al Presidente Trump ayer, señalando las amenazas crecientes contra defensores de derechos humanos, periodistas y observadores internacionales (incluyendo ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos) en Honduras. Los miembros de la Cámara de Representantes y del Senado citan específicamente amenazas de muerte contra periodistas y grupos de derechos humanos, expulsiones de ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos y de otras nacionalidades quienes documentan violaciones de derechos humanos y campañas de intimidación contra miembros de la sociedad civil. Llamaron a la administración a 1) solicitar que el Gobierno de Honduras investigue estos ataques inmediatamente 2) dirigir el Departamento de Estado a revalorar su certificación de Honduras en derechos humanos 3) investigue amenazas contra ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos y 4) expresar públicamente su preocupación sobre estos ataques.

Después de la divulgación de la carta, el Senador Markey dijo,
“La administración Trump no puede participar en el negocio de permitir la impunidad. Continuando el apoyo para el gobierno de Juan Orlando Hernández sin continuar revalorando su comportamiento solamente profundizará la destrucción del estado de derecho, lisiará una economía ya devastada y permitirá el miedo generalizado del pueblo de Honduras y no es coincidencia que estos son los factores que producen la migración masivo de ciudadanos de Honduras que estamos observando actualmente. Para responder apropiadamente a la crisis de los que huyen de Honduras en la caravana de migrantes, la administración tiene que desarrollar políticas que responden a las causas de raíz de esta migración y no hacer falsas aseveraciones sobre los que huyen o negar refugio.”
La Representante Schakowsky dijo,
“En apoyar el régimen corrupto y represivo de Juan Orlando Hernández, los Estados Unidos está aprobando tácitamente la violencia sancionada por el estado y la violación de los derechos de los trabajadores, pueblos indígenas e libertades individuales. El régimen de Hernández ha hecho imposible lo que ya era un reto grande para Hondureños empobrecidos y de esta manera contribuyó a la creación de las circunstancias que obligan migrantes y refugiados a huir hacia los Estados Unidos. En apoyar el Sr. Hernández sin cuestionar las violaciones de derechos humanos delineados en nuestra carta, el Presidente Trump y su Administración tienen alguna responsabilidad en crear esta situación también. No debemos tolerar este comportamiento anti-Democrático por parte de un aliado de los Estados Unidos.”
