Washington (November 18, 2020) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) today announced that Democratic strategist John Walsh will join his office as Chief of Staff. Walsh, who formerly served as the campaign manager for Markey’s successful 2020 re-election bid, brings decades of leadership experience to the Senate office.
“John drove my re-election campaign to an historic victory. He is a brilliant strategist, an effective leader, and a committed public servant,” Senator Markey said. “John has the experience and visionary thinking to drive our progressive movement forward and pass a Green New Deal. I look forward to continuing our partnership and friendship, and creating bold, progressive change across our country together.”
“Senator Markey’s record of leading and delivering for Massachusetts and his commitment to progressive values are why the voters of Massachusetts sent him back to the Senate with a resounding mandate,” John Walsh said. “To have an opportunity to work for him at this moment in our history on behalf of the people of Massachusetts is a great honor. I’m committed to bringing everything I have to this new role.”
Walsh previously led the political organizations supporting former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. He served as Patrick's campaign manager from 2005 to 2006, and as the transition director for the incoming Patrick-Murray administration in 2007.
Walsh also served as Chair of the Massachusetts Democratic Party from 2007 to 2013. In 2018, he served as the treasurer of the Reason To Believe PAC, a national organization dedicated to electing progressive Democrats, focused on grassroots organizing. He served as a selectman in his hometown of Abington for ten years beginning in 1983.
He is a graduate of Cardinal Spellman High School in Brockton, Massachusetts and earned an A.B. from Princeton University.
