Washington (June 28, 2024) - Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) today released the following statement on the Biden administration’s announcement on the extension and redesignation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti.
“I welcome today’s action by the Biden administration to continue to protect Haitians in the United States with Temporary Protected Status,” said Senator Markey. “The Haitian people continue to face extraordinary threats of violence in their country, and the federal government also must halt deportations by air and sea. For decades, our country has welcomed and protected immigrants fleeing violence and turmoil around the world. This humanitarian action will prevent further suffering and ensure Haitian families are free to remain in the United States until it is safe for them to return home.”
In May 2024, Senator Markey and the House Haiti Caucus Co-Chairs wrote to Secretary Mayorkas urging the administration to halt deportations to Haiti amid a political and humanitarian crisis. In March 2024, Senators Markey and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), along with the entire Massachusetts congressional delegation, sent a letter urging the expediting of the processing of immigrant visas for Haitians, particularly for relatives of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents. Senator Markey and the House Haiti Caucus Co-Chairs also led their colleagues in urging the Biden administration to redesignate TPS status for Haiti in March 2024. In December 2023, Senator Markey and Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) sent a letter to President Joe Biden calling on the administration to address the rising state of insecurity and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Haiti. In October 2022, Senator Markey led a letter to urge the Biden administration to extend and redesignate TPS for Haitians living in the United States, a request that was granted in December 2022.
