Washington (October 20, 2021) – Senator Edward J. Markey
(D-Mass.) released the following statement today after Senate Republicans once
again filibustered voting rights legislation. Senate Democrats all voted for
the Freedom to Vote Act, legislation that would protect our democracy
and the fundamental right to vote.
“Republican colleagues once again chose obstruction over
the debate when presented with the opportunity to protect the will and the
voices of the American people. Ensuring the right to vote is how we restore
faith in our democracy and how we turn popular opinion into legislative action.
Voting rights are how Americans make their voices heard about how we should
combat the climate crisis, respond to the pandemic, ensure health care, and
protect families. In the face of continued Republican opposition, we must
abolish the filibuster and pass the Freedom to Vote Act to ensure every
voice across our country is heard.”
This June, Senate
Republicans filibustered
debate on the
For the People Act,
legislation to reform the United States electoral system to expand
voting rights, keep dark money out of politics, and limit partisan
gerrymandering.
