Washington (December 20, 2016) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement today after a truck rammed into a crowd of people at a holiday Christmas market in Berlin. The German authorities are investigating the incident as a possible terrorist attack.

“I condemn today’s barbaric attack in Berlin on innocent bystanders visiting a Christmas market. My thoughts and prayers are with those killed and injured, their loved ones, and all the people of Germany at this tragic moment. Such a wanton and vicious attack on people celebrating a beloved and joyous holiday has no place in a civilized society and can never be justified.

“The United States stands shoulder to shoulder with our German allies. Together, we will overcome this scourge of terror and violence.
