Washington (January 18, 2018) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), a member of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, released the following statement today after voting in opposition to the FISA Amendments Reauthorization bill.

“We need to strike a balance between liberty and security and not give the government unchecked surveillance power. That’s why I opposed today’s surveillance legislation because it will allow the government to spy on American citizens.  We can and should provide for intelligence gathering against terrorism while still protecting Americans’ privacy.”
