Washington (August 1, 2024) - Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) released the following statement after the Biden administration secured the release from the Government of the Russian Federation of wrongfully detained Americans Paul Whelan, Evan Gershkovich, and Alsu Kurmasheva, as well as Vladimir Kara-Murza, a permanent U.S. resident.
“After years of wrongful detainment by Russia, I welcome the release of U.S. Marine Paul Whelan, journalist Evan Gershkovich, Alsu Kurmasheva, and Vladimir Kara-Murza, and am grateful they will soon be reunited with friends and loved ones,” said Senator Markey. “I praise the efforts of the Biden-Harris administration and our NATO allies in this effort. We celebrate today, and we remember all those still wrongfully detained or held hostage around the world and recommit to bringing them home.”
