Washington (June 23, 2022) - Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) released the following statement after the Senate passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act:
“Tonight’s passage of the first bipartisan gun safety agreement in decades should be viewed as the start of negotiations, not the end. We need more than just this moment, more than this breakthrough. Tomorrow, Republicans need to continue to work with Democrats on the next step in a comprehensive gun safety agenda that takes weapons of war off our streets and out of our schools. We can’t keep prioritizing the Second Amendment ahead of second graders.
“Only when we end once and for all the NRA and the gun lobby’s stranglehold on Republicans in Congress, and act bravely and morally in defense of the lives of our children and our communities, will we deliver a future free from the tragic and preventable scourge of gun violence. I continue to be inspired by the mothers, families, and young activists and organizers who got us here. As you continue this fight, I am with you.”
