Washington (April 16, 2024) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives transmitted to the U.S. Senate the articles of impeachment for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

“This impeachment process is a partisan sham meant to show fealty to Donald Trump. Abuse of the impeachment process erodes public trust, which is already at historic lows in our institutions and government due to Donald Trump’s lies and MAGA misinformation. The House impeachment articles against Secretary Mayorkas make faulty allegations citing to overturned statutes and reversed cases. Their claims lack the substantial evidence necessary to show a plausible violation of law.

“Republicans are more interested in creating political drama with this impeachment than policy solutions for the immigration system. Republicans have shown time and again that they are unwilling to come to the table to negotiate policies to give people coming to this country for a better life fairness and dignity. They would rather criminalize immigration and run on it as a campaign slogan than reform our broken system comprehensively. Impeachment is not a tool to settle policy disagreements.

“We must create meaningful pathways to settlement and citizenship, full and fair processing of protection claims, safeguards for DREAMers, and meaningful federal support for communities where new arrivals settle. I will continue to advocate for solutions that center humanity and hope and prioritize dignity and determination for all who seek a better life.”
