Washington (July 8, 2022) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Policy, released the following statement after the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

“I am shocked and saddened by the killing of Shinzo Abe, who served as Prime Minister of Japan through three American presidencies and worked to strengthen our nations’ decades-long alliance, an alliance which has served as the cornerstone for peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. His assassination deals a great blow to our shared principles of democracy and the cause of peace. My deepest condolences to his family at this difficult time.”
