Urges Appointment of Replacement Who Recognizes the Importance of American Global Leadership and Value in Working with Partners and Allies Instead of Against Them

Washington (October 9, 2018) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Ranking Member of its East Asia Subcommittee, released the following statement on the resignation of US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.

“I thank Ambassador Haley for her service despite our stark policy differences,” said Senator Markey. “Ambassador Haley had the unenviable task of representing America in an international body the President has regularly insulted and undermined. Unfortunately, she reinforced some of the administration’s misguided policies that have gravely damaged America’s standing in the world, as well as our security and that of our allies. That was the environment facing Ambassador Haley. The President’s next UN Ambassador must be willing to take a different tack and emphasize the importance of strong, consistent American leadership around the globe. The many challenges we face – from truly dealing with the North Korea nuclear threat to addressing the ethnic cleansing committed against Rohingya refugees in Burma – are too great for America not to be in the driver’s seat. I know many of my colleagues on the Foreign Relations Committee share this view, and we will be reviewing carefully the President’s next nominee.”
