Washington (March 15, 2024) - Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) today released his sixth episode of the “The Ed Markey Podcast,” featuring Sunrise Movement Political Director Michelle Weindling and Youth Organizer Wei Zhou. The Sunrise Movement is a movement of young people who are taking on the fossil fuel industry and fighting for Green New Deal policies, such as an American Climate Corps, across the United States. In February, the Sunrise Movementjoined Senator Markey in front of the U.S. Capitol to celebrate the Green New Deal’s five-year anniversary.

In December 2023, the Biden administration heeded the call of Senator Markey and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) for a Civilian Climate Corps by announcing the launch of the new American Climate Corps program to mobilize and train a diverse generation of 20,000 service members for the climate resilience economy. In President Biden’s State of the Union address in March 2024, he pledgedto triple the size of the American Climate Corps.

In their podcast conversation, the group talk about the how young people are fueling an intersectional climate movement and leading the fight for climate justice.

“I’m inspired by being with the two of you and the energy that you're bringing to the movement and your willingness to take on Big Oil, Big Coal, Big Natural Gas because they're not going away easily,” said Senator Markey. “But we are going to win. It’s inevitable that we’re going to win, and it's inevitable because of young people.”

Every Friday until Earth Day in April, “The Ed Markey Podcast” will feature a new episode with a variety of climate champions—from lawmakers to youth organizers and environmental justice activists. “The Ed Markey Podcast” spotlights how the Green New Deal movement has transformed the United States’ national climate agenda by creating new union jobs, delivering long-overdue justice, and reducing dangerous pollution.

Senator Markey and Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez recently unveiled a new report, “Five Years of the Green New Deal,” detailing what the Green New Deal means for good-paying clean jobs, environmental justice, climate action, and providing a path forward for years to come.
