Washington (October 6, 2017) – Senators Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), and Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) this week introduced bipartisan legislation to posthumously award the Congressional Gold Medal to J. Christopher Stevens, Glen A. Doherty, Tyrone Woods and Sean Smith in recognition of their contributions to the nation. Stevens, Doherty, Woods and Smith were killed in the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya in September 2012.
 
Ambassador Stevens was serving as United States Ambassador to Libya during the attack. Doherty, a former combat-decorated Navy SEAL, was a native of Winchester, Massachusetts. Woods, a native of Portland, Oregon was also a former combat-decorated Navy SEAL. Smith had served in the Air Force where he was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal.
 
“The commitment of Glen Doherty, Tyrone Woods, Sean Smith and Ambassador Stevens to our great country and their distinguished service made them American heroes,” said Senator Markey. “Their example of exceptionalism should endure forever with the awarding of the Congressional Gold Medal. I am proud to once again introduce this bipartisan legislation. These brave souls made the ultimate sacrifice, and we should honor their memories will this distinction.”
 
“The four Americans who were killed during the September 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi were honorable, upstanding American heroes,” said Senator Inhofe. “It is past time to honor their memories by posthumously awarding them the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of their courage and sacrifice. I especially appreciate that the effort to award the Congressional Gold Medal to Ambassador Chris Stevens, Glen Doherty, Tyrone Woods and Sean Smith is bipartisan and look forward to advancing this bill quickly.”
 
“Glen Doherty, Tyrone Woods, S8ean Smith and Ambassador Chris Stevens gave their lives while serving others during the terrorist attack on our facilities in Benghazi. We should honor their memory,” said Senator Warren. “Throughout their careers, these four men served our country with honor, and I am proud to support this legislation recognizing their heroic sacrifice with the Congressional Gold Medal.”
 
“The four Americans who were killed in the line of duty served their country honorably by advancing diplomacy, safeguarding Americans, and countering terrorism in their daily work,” said Senator Isakson, a member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. “This Congressional Gold Medal is one of many ways we honor their service and pledge our continued commitment to all those who serve our country overseas.”
