Washington, D.C. – United States Senators Elizabeth Warren and Edward J. Markey today announced that the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) will receive $6.8 million in rental housing assistance from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This Project Rental Assistance grant, awarded through HUD’s Section 811 Supportive Housing for Persons with Disabilities program, will provide DHCD with critical funding to support affordable housing for low-income residents with disabilities.
“We need to make sure a place to call home is within reach for everyone,” said Senator Warren. “This federal funding will go a long way to help Massachusetts ensure there is safe, stable and affordable housing for the most vulnerable in our communities.”
"We have a moral obligation to ensure that the most vulnerable in our society can find a safe and affordable place to live," Senator Markey said. "This funding will help provide essential services and supports for disabled and low-income individuals and lift the quality of living situations for those who need assistance the most. I thank the Massachusetts Department of Housing & Community Development for all of their efforts to secure and administer these critical funds."
HUD’s Section 811 Project Rental Assistance provides funding to state housing agencies that have partnered with state health and human services agencies to make sure housing is available for people with disabilities who are most deeply in need of assistance . DHCD will allocate this grant funding to existing low-income housing developments that are funded by Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC), HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME), or other sources of funding.
