Markey Reacts To Bush EPA Dropping Plant Regulatory Loophole

The following statement from Chairman Edward J. Markey, Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, is in response to notification from the Environmental Protection Agency that they will not make last minute changes to the New Source Review program for power plants.

“I am glad to see that a little sunshine at midnight persuaded the Bush Administration to back off its attempts to push through a loophole for dirty power plants that would have significantly degraded air quality for all Americans and exacerbated the climate crisis.”

“The EPA staff had estimated that this rule change would have led to an increase in global warming emissions of at least 74 million tons per year by 2020. My Select Committee will continue to keep the pressure on the Bush Administration until they turn off the lights at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.”

The Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming will be holding a hearing tomorrow (December 11th, 2008 at 10 AM in 210 Cannon House Office Building) to examine this and other Bush Administration proposed last-minute rulemakings that would present a threat to air and water quality as well as endangered species.
