Markey: Detroit Backing Carbon Limits, Now Must Do Same for 35 MPG
As Ford, Chrysler Join Global Warming Partnership, Detroit Must Make Fuel Economy-Warming Link, Says ChairmanWashington, DC - Today Ford and Chrysler joined the U.S. Climate Action Partnership, a robust coalition of businesses and environmental groups calling for mandatory limits on global warming pollution. The two Detroit automakers join General Motors in the partnership, positioning one of America’s largest industries squarely behind the political movement towards global warming limits.
But the automakers are also resisting increases in fuel economy standards. Last week the Senate passed a 35 mile per gallon standard, and Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) is pushing for similar limits in the House. America’s cars and trucks contribute over 20 percent of heat-trapping pollution, and America’s dependence on imported oil has risen to 60 percent after more than two decades of no fuel economy increases.
“Detroit is now squarely behind limits on global warming pollution,” said Markey, Chairman of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. “Now they need to make the all-important link between heat-trapping emissions and the fuel economy of the cars, trucks and SUVs they make. Supporting stronger fuel economy standards in this summer’s energy package would show they are committed to fighting global warming and decreasing America’s dependence on oil.”
The Select Committee was active during the 110th and 111th Congresses. This is an archived version of the website, to ensure that the public has ongoing access to the Select Committee record. This website, including external links, will not be updated after Jan. 3rd, 2010.
