New Alarming Reports on Arctic Ice Melting

Select Committee: NEWS

Some alarming stories on Arctic ice melting this week.

First the New York Times: Scientists Report Severe Retreat of Arctic Ice

•    “The cap of floating sea ice on the Arctic Ocean, which retreats under summer’s warmth, this year shrank more than one million square miles — or six Californias — below the average minimum area reached in recent decades, scientists reported Thursday.”

And ABC News had this story: Arctic Ice Continues Record Melting

•    “An area of Arctic sea ice the size of Florida has melted away in just the last six days as melting at the top of the planet continues at a record rate. 2007 has already broken the record for the lowest amount of sea ice ever recorded, say scientists, smashing the old record set in 2005.”

The Select Committee will be holding a briefing to examine the dramatic changes in the Arctic on Tuesday, September 25th at 9:00 AM.

PLEASE NOTE: The House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming was created to explore American clean energy solutions that end our reliance on foreign oil and reduce carbon pollution.

The Select Committee was active during the 110th and 111th Congresses. This is an archived version of the website, to ensure that the public has ongoing access to the Select Committee record. This website, including external links, will not be updated after Jan. 3rd, 2010.
