Markey to Secretary Rice: What’s the Deal with the Hunt Oil Deal?
Oil Dependence Concerns, National Security Points to Increased Need for Energy Bill
WASHINGTON (October 2, 2007) – Today, Chairman Edward J. Markey sent a letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on the embattled deal for Iraqi oil by the Hunt Corporation. Citing America’s debilitating dependence on foreign oil and its influence on accomplishing foreign policy objectives, Rep. Markey asks pointed questions of Secretary Rice on a deal that highlights these continuing national security challenges posed by our oil dependence.
These new developments also point to the real need to pass the energy legislation now being considered in Congress, which includes a fuel economy standard of 35 miles per gallon. That standard would increase our national security by decreasing U.S. dependence on foreign oil, saving nearly double the oil we currently import from the Persian Gulf by 2030.”
“Passing the energy bill can serve as a shield to an increasingly deadly weapon—our oil dependence,” said Rep. Markey, who is Chairman of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. “While our brave soldiers fight for a stable Iraq, deals behind their backs could mean no stability.”
