Prince Charles Sends Letter of Climate Action Support to Markey

Highlights Positive Vision of UK Climate Program as Chairman Markey Hosts CEOs

WASHINGTON (October 10, 2007) – In a letter sent to Chairman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales expressed his support for urgent action on global warming as members of the UK's Corporate Leaders Group appeared today before the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming.

The Prince of Wales notes the scientific consensus on the issue, especially the latest science from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and the need for action in the upcoming U.N. conference on global warming.

In the letter, Prince Charles says: “To secure the future for generations to follow, I hope that the boldest possible targets can be set, together with policies needed to implement them.”

Congress is currently considering two energy bills passed by the House and Senate that would reduce global warming pollution by up to 40 percent by 2030, and save nearly twice as much oil as we currently import from the Middle East by the same year.

The Corporate Leaders Group was established in 2005, and has brought UK and international business leaders together to push for effective policies on global warming. Two members of this group--Alain Grisay of F&C Investments and Neil Carson of Johnson Matthey, plc--appeared before the Select Committee today to discuss these effective policies to transition into a low-carbon, high-profit economy.
