Markey Congratulates Al Gore, IPCC on Nobel Win
WASHINGTON (October 12, 2007) – Chairman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming congratulated former Vice President Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on their well-earned Nobel Peace Prize.
Below is the statement of Chairman Markey:
“This award recognizes not only the work of Mr. Gore and the IPCC, but the very real challenge the world faces in global warming. If we do not cap and reduce heat-trapping emissions and stop the warming of the earth, drought, disease and catastrophe will follow.
“Now that Mr. Gore has won the Nobel Peace Prize, it is up to Congress to act. This is not just a huge environmental issue, it is a matter of war and peace for many regions of the world. In the United States, the first step toward a clean energy future is for Congress to pass the energy bill now pending here in Washington. Then we must pass comprehensive global warming legislation to save our planet for future generations.”
