Markey: New Senate Bill Pushes Movement in Congress
Energy Bill Would Advance Pollution Cuts for Eventual Climate Legislation, Says Chairman
WASHINGTON (October 18, 2007) – Chairman Edward J. Markey of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming reacted today to a global warming bill introduced in the United States Senate by Senators Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) and John Warner (R-VA).
Below is the statement of Chairman Markey:
“Senators Lieberman and Warner have made a serious effort to move forward the debate in the Senate on global warming. I commend them for their work, and I look forward to discussions on theirs and other bills.
“But Congress doesn’t have to wait to begin the fight against global warming. Energy legislation before Congress could cut U.S. global warming emissions in 2030 by 40 percent of what is needed to save the planet.
“The political climate is now here to save the earthly climate, and I am encouraged everyday by the progress we are making.”
