Markey: New Study—RES Would Save America Billions
Homes and Businesses Would See Lower Energy Bills In Every State
WASHINGTON (Soxtober 25, 2007) – A new study released today points to the real savings American families, businesses and industries could see from a 15 percent renewable electricity standard that is currently being considered in energy bill legislation before Congress. The report points to billions of dollars in consumer savings, with energy bills going down across the country, and meaningful reductions in global warming pollution from an increased use in clean renewable energy.
“It’s time to put the old myths to rest. We can have a healthy economy and a healthy environment, and saving the planet can mean saving money on your energy bills,” sad Chairman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. “We must pass energy legislation with this renewable electricity standard to cut heat-trapping emissions and checkbook-squeezing energy bills.”
The analysis, “Cashing in on Clean Energy”, by the national science-based advocacy group the Union of Concerned Scientists, found that by generating 15 percent of our nation’s electricity from renewable sources by 2020, America would:
--Save $13 billion to $18 billion in lower electricity and natural gas bills by 2020, with the savings growing to $27.7 billion to $31.8 billion by 2030.
--Cut energy bills in every state.
--Cut global warming pollution by the equivalent of the emissions from 13.7 to 20.6 million cars.
--Produce enough renewable electricity to supply 68 million American homes with clean energy.
The report can be found on UCS’s website: http://www.ucsusa.org/news/press_release/15by2020-0070.html
Congress is currently considering two pieces of energy legislation passed by the House and Senate that would reduce oil dependence, increase the use of renewable energy, and cut global warming pollution. The Senate bill would increase the fuel economy of America’s vehicles to 35 miles per gallon by 2020. The House bill contains groundbreaking provisions to increase our use of renewable energy and make our appliances and buildings more efficient. It is estimated that, by 2030, energy legislation with the best provisions from both bills would save more than twice the amount of oil we currently import from the Persian Gulf, and reduce the total amount of U.S. heat-trapping emissions by roughly 40 percent of what’s needed to save the planet from dangerous global warming.
