Bush Censors CDC Testimony on Threat of Global Warming on Health
Once again the Bush administration is trying to reduce the heat of global warming through censorship. On October 23, Dr. Julie Gerberding, the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, testified before Congress on the looming health impacts global warming will have on the United States. Her comments, however, had been altered by the White House who eliminated statements such as:
“Scientific evidence supports the view that the earth's climate is changing…. Despite this extensive activity, the public health effects of climate change remain largely unaddressed. CDC considers climate change a serious public health concern.''
That paragraph was not approved by the White House. Public health experts assert that potential disease threats include water borne pathogens that thrive in warmer temperatures, and infectious diseases that will find new geographic ranges available to them. Asthma and other lung diseases are also expected to rise as warmer temperatures cause increased air pollution and ozone levels.
Today, Rep. Markey released the following statement:
“Once again, we are left to wonder about the CDC’s ability to convey information about threats to public health. The CDC obviously has concerns about the health impacts of global warming on the American public. The White House shouldn’t prevent them from telling Congress about the serious consequences of global warming. Dr. Gerberding's original testimony should be released. If the White House wants the world to believe they are truly concerned about global warming it is time to halt their censorship of the science behind global warming for their own political gain. By preventing accurate information from being presented, they are putting the health and wellbeing of the United States at risk.”
