Markey Calls for Release of Oil from Strategic Reserve As America Ships $500k/minute Overseas
Near $100 Oil, $3 Gas, and High Heating Oil Prices Demand Swift Action and Passage of Energy Bill for Long-Term Solution
WASHINGTON – Today Chairman Edward J. Markey called on President Bush to release much-needed oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve as the winter months approach and worries over heating oil costs, $100 oil and the highest gas prices since August of 2006 are hitting American families. Select Committee analysis finds that America is sending over $500,000 abroad every minute to finance our oil addiction.
Markey will call for the passage of an energy bill currently being considered before Congress that would raise the fuel economy of America’s vehicles to 35 miles per gallon by 2020, and increase the use of homegrown renewable fuels to 36 billion gallons a year. If passed, the energy bill would save America more than twice the amount of oil we currently import from the Persian Gulf by 2020.
Rep. Markey sent a letter to the President, which will be available at the press conference and at globalwarming.house.gov
