California Lawsuit Puts Pressure on White House to Follow Supreme Court Decision
WASHINGTON (November 8, 2007) – California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Jerry Brown filed suit today against the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to be allowed to go forward with clean car standards that would cut global warming pollution in California and nearly a dozen other states. The lawsuit follows months of delay and a clear decision from the Supreme Court that gives the EPA full authority to cut the heat-trapping emissions it is currently preventing the states from reducing.
Massachusetts and 11 other states are planning to adopt California’s vehicle global warming emissions standards. In 2004 California adopted the nation’s first ever regulation to reduce global warming pollution from cars. It requires emissions of carbon dioxide and other pollutants to be reduced by 22 percent by the 2012 model year and 30 percent by the 2016 model year. Canada has also said it will adopt the standards, along with the states, which would comprise over one-third of the North American car market.
Below is the statement of Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), Chairman of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming:
“The president is once again showing that he is satisfied to run out the clock on his administration without taking action or allowing states to take action on global warming.
“The planet is sick, and the president is saying ‘take two aspirin and call me when I leave office.’
“The president must grant a waiver to California, Massachusetts and the ten other states that want to cut heat-trapping emissions from their vehicles. And he should not delay any further in doing so.”
