Markey: New IPCC Report Must Spur Action In Washington

Energy Bill Would Start U.S. on Emissions-Cutting Path, Says Chairman

WASHINGTON (November 16, 2007) – With the fourth and final report from the Nobel-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change set to be released tomorrow in Valencia, Spain, support for immediate climate action must now come from the White House and still-reticent elements in congress, said Chairman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming.

The fourth IPCC report is a synthesis of the previous three from this year, and states that the warming of the climate is “unequivocal” and there are real steps that can be taken in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and other alternative sources to cut global warming emissions.

Congress is currently considering an energy bill that would increase the fuel economy of America’s vehicles, increase the amount of renewable energy produced and used in the United States, and send billions of gallons of renewable fuels to the nation’s fuel pumps. If the best parts of the energy bill were passed and signed by the President, it would, by 2030, reduce U.S. global warming emissions up to 40 percent of what scientists say is needed to avert dangerous global warming.

Below is the statement of Rep. Markey:

“The scientists have done their job, and now it’s time President Bush and this congress do their part and support immediate action on global warming, starting with this energy bill.

“The current energy bill will put us on a positive path towards making the substantial cuts in global warming emissions needed to save the planet. Setting stronger fuel economy standards, increasing the use of renewable electricity and fuels, and increasing energy efficiency will make a significant contribution to the heat-trapping emissions cuts needed to save the planet.

“As a cyclone batters Bangladesh, a drought parches the Southeast U.S., and the American West dusts away the ashes of wildfires, the signs of a climate in peril are all around us. We need no new evidence of global warming. What we need now is action.”
